Halal ingredient checker: how to read any food label
Barcode lookup fails on local bakery items, small store brands and anything freshly reformulated. This is what you do instead, and it works in any language.
A halal ingredient checker reads the printed ingredient list rather than the barcode, extracts the ingredient names and E-numbers from the text, and classifies each one. When you need this instead of a barcode scan
- The product is not in the database. Most common with local bakery goods, regional store brands, and products from markets with less complete data coverage.
- The barcode will not read. Damaged, curved, or under glare.
- The recipe has just changed. Databases lag reformulations by weeks or months. The printed label is always current.
- There is no barcode at all. Deli counters, market stalls, catering packs.
- You want to verify. Reading the actual label is the strongest check available to a consumer.
Reading an ingredient list yourself: the order that matters
Ingredient lists are ordered by weight, descending. That is useful but not where the halal risk sits. The risky items are almost always at the end, in tiny quantities. Work backwards.
Step 1: scan the tail of the list for E-numbers
Emulsifiers, stabilisers, colours and glazing agents cluster at the end. These are the codes to react to:
Stop and check: E120, E441, E542, E904, E920, E1510.

Step 2: look for the words that hide animal derivatives
Gelatine, collagen, rennet, pepsin, lipase, tallow, lard, suet, stearic acid, glycerol, glycerine, carmine, cochineal, shellac, confectioner's glaze, L-cysteine, bone phosphate, isinglass, whey (check the rennet), lard-based shortening.
Step 3: treat vague terms as unresolved
"Natural flavouring", "flavouring", "emulsifier", "enzymes", "glazing agent" and "shortening" without a named source are not clean bills of health. They are the absence of information. See what Mushbooh means.
Step 4: check for alcohol carriers
Ethanol, ethyl alcohol, E1510, and extracts such as vanilla extract. Covered in is alcohol in food haram.
Step 5: look for the positive signals
A halal certification mark, a "suitable for vegetarians" or vegan claim, or an explicit "vegetable" qualifier on an emulsifier. Any of these resolves most of the doubt on the pack in one glance.
Using the ingredient scan feature
1. Open the ingredient scan tab
It is in the bottom tab bar, between Compare and Settings.
2. Frame the ingredient list
Get the ingredient paragraph filling most of the frame. Ingredient text is printed small, usually 1–1.5 mm, so get closer than feels natural, and let the camera focus before holding steady.
3. Read the detected additives
Detected items appear as coloured chips at the bottom of the screen under "Possible Match", for example beeswax, e211, e338, e621, e901. Each chip is an additive the app has recognised in the text.
4. Reset and re-scan for a long list
Ingredient declarations often wrap around a curved pack. Tap Reset and scan the next section rather than trying to capture everything in one frame.
Why will the camera not read the label?
- Fight the glare. Foil and glossy film are the main obstacle. Tilt the pack away from overhead lights.
- Flatten the panel. On cans and bottles, only the section directly facing the camera will be in focus. Work in sections.
- Find the right language block. Multilingual packs repeat the same list in six languages. Any block works, because E-numbers are identical across languages. That is precisely why the E-system exists.
- Steady beats close. A slightly further, sharp image reads better than a very close, shaky one.
- Check what it missed. Text recognition on small print is not perfect. Treat the chips as a strong first pass, then read the tail of the list yourself for anything the app did not pick up.
Why E-numbers work in any language
This is where checking additives beats reading ingredients when you are travelling. A Thai or Japanese ingredient list may be entirely unreadable to you, but E-numbers are written the same way everywhere. E471 is E471 in Bangkok, Berlin and Birmingham. Scanning for codes gets you a real answer in a language you do not speak.

Frequently asked questions
What if a product is not in the barcode database?
Use the ingredient scan tab instead. Point the camera at the printed ingredient list on the back of the pack and the app reads the text directly, extracting the additive codes it recognises. This works for any product anywhere, including items with no barcode at all.
Can the app read ingredient lists in other languages?
E-numbers are written identically in every language, so code detection works regardless of the language on the pack. This is the main practical reason to scan for E-numbers rather than trying to translate an ingredient list while travelling.
Is reading the label better than scanning the barcode?
The printed label is always the most current and authoritative source, because it reflects the recipe in the pack you are holding. Barcode scanning is faster and gives you more context such as country of origin. The strongest approach is to scan the barcode first, then read the label for anything flagged as doubtful.
