Is E435 (polysorbate 60) halal?
Polysorbate 60 is manufactured from sorbitol, stearic acid and ethylene oxide; the stearic-acid feedstock creates the halal question.
E435 (polysorbate 60 or Tween 60) is source-dependent. Its stearic acid can come from vegetable fat or animal fat. E435 made with verified vegetable stearic acid is generally halal; a confirmed porcine source is haram; and material from a permitted land animal needs the source and slaughter evidence required by the standard you follow. EU, Codex and US specifications identify the additive but do not give every retail product a universal vegetable-source guarantee. With no supplier statement or recognised certificate, treat E435 as unresolved, not automatically pork.
What polysorbate 60 is made from
The formal name for E435 is polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monostearate. “Polysorbate 60” is the common name, and “Tween 60” is a widely used trade-style synonym. The EU specification describes it as partial esters of sorbitol and its anhydrides with edible commercial stearic acid, condensed with about 20 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of sorbitol and its anhydrides.
That long definition can be reduced to three relevant building blocks:
- Sorbitol and sorbitan: the carbohydrate-derived portion.
- Stearic acid: a fatty acid that can have vegetable or animal feedstock.
- Ethylene oxide: used in the manufacturing reaction; it is not animal tissue.
SANHA classifies E435 as Mushbooh specifically because the stearic acid source must be checked. The code itself does not mean pig fat, and the word “stearate” does not prove either plant or animal origin.

A manufacturer statement should apply to the exact product and market. “We normally use vegetable emulsifiers” is weaker than “the polysorbate 60 in barcode X sold in Belgium is made with vegetable-origin stearic acid.” Formulas and ingredient suppliers can change.
Is polysorbate 60 made from pork?
It can use animal-derived stearic acid, but the name does not establish pork. The official EU definition says “edible commercial stearic acid”; the US regulation describes stearic acid usually accompanied by related fatty acids, chiefly palmitic. Neither wording promises that every supplier uses vegetable oil, but neither says that pork is the default.
This is the difference between possibility and product evidence. A possible animal feedstock justifies checking the source. It does not justify publishing a definite pork claim about every cake, ice cream or emulsifier blend containing E435.
Food-grade polysorbate 60 is highly processed, and its finished chemical behaviour is consistent across feedstocks. That makes the origin hard to infer through appearance or taste. There is no reliable home test for plant-versus-animal stearic acid; traceability documents and certification are the useful evidence.
Can the stearic acid in E435 be vegetable-derived?
Yes. Vegetable oils can supply commercial fatty acids, including stearic acid, and halal-certified vegetable-origin polysorbate 60 is available in ingredient supply chains. That is why E435 should not be placed on a permanent “haram E-number” list.
The challenge is traceability rather than chemical possibility. A finished-food label normally names polysorbate 60 but not the oil or fat used upstream to make its stearic acid. A useful technical statement should identify the fatty-acid origin, cover the actual grade supplied and be current for the manufacturing site. If the statement says only “sorbitol is vegetable” it has answered the easier part and left the stearic acid unresolved.
Where a plant source is documented, still read the full formulation. A cake containing vegetable E435 could separately contain animal shortening, gelatin, alcohol-based flavour or non-halal dairy ingredients.
What E435 does in food
Polysorbate 60 is an emulsifier and stabiliser. It helps ingredients that naturally separate—especially fat and water—remain evenly dispersed. It can also support aeration, texture and consistent processing.
The current US rule lists uses in cakes and cake mixes, icings and fillings, confectionery coatings, dressings, shortenings, whipped toppings, frozen desserts and other specified applications, with limits that vary by category. Codex identifies INS 435 and links it to current food-category provisions. An ingredient being legally authorised at a set level does not answer whether its fatty acid meets a halal standard.
Common places to inspect include:
- Commercial cakes, cake mixes, icing and cream fillings
- Whipped toppings and coffee-whitener systems
- Ice cream, frozen custard and other frozen desserts
- Chocolate-flavoured syrups and confectionery coatings
- Dressings, shortenings and bakery fats
- Powdered dessert or beverage mixes

The suffix “60” distinguishes this material from other polysorbates. E432 is polysorbate 20, E433 is polysorbate 80, E434 is polysorbate 40 and E436 is polysorbate 65. Their fatty-acid components differ, so a supplier answer for polysorbate 80 does not automatically cover polysorbate 60.
E435 is not the same as E491 or E471
E435 and E491 both involve sorbitan and stearic acid, but they are not interchangeable names. E491 sorbitan monostearate does not contain the polyoxyethylene portion identified in polysorbate 60. Both can inherit a stearic-acid source question.
E471 mono- and diglycerides are a different emulsifier family produced from glycerol and fatty acids. They can also be plant- or animal-sourced, but a vegetable declaration for E471 does not establish the source of a separately listed E435. Review each supplier ingredient or the finished product certificate.
Likewise, E435 is not gelatin. It can be used in a gelatin dessert, but polysorbate 60 is an emulsifier while gelatin is an animal collagen protein. One ingredient’s status does not settle the other.
Does “vegan”, “vegetable” or “kosher” resolve E435?
A credible vegan certification or product-specific “vegetable-origin stearic acid” statement is strong evidence that the E435 did not use animal fat. Keep that evidence tied to its scope and date. A generic leaf icon or an unregulated phrase may not provide the same assurance.
Vegan and halal programmes ask overlapping but different questions. A vegan mark focuses on animal inputs; a halal audit can also review processing aids, alcohol policy, contamination controls and the complete product. A kosher mark is also a separate religious certification and should not be substituted for the recognised halal certificate you intend to rely on.
Safety and halal status are different checks
EU and JECFA specifications set identity and purity requirements for food-grade polysorbate 60, and US law controls its permitted uses and levels. EU specifications include limits for residual manufacturing-related substances such as ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. The existence of a strict trace limit should not be turned into a claim that compliant E435 is the same thing as consuming those processing chemicals.
Those controls answer food-safety and legal-use questions. They do not reveal whether the commercial stearic acid came from vegetable oil, beef fat or another feedstock. Conversely, a vegetable source answers the core halal-origin question but does not replace allergy or medical advice.
How to verify polysorbate 60 efficiently
- Match the exact product and country. Record its barcode, flavour, size and label date.
- Look for every name. Search for E435, INS 435, polysorbate 60, polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monostearate and Tween 60.
- Verify product certification. Check the official certifier directory, current dates and production-site or product scope.
- Ask about the fatty acid. Request confirmation that the stearic acid used in the polysorbate 60 is vegetable-derived or otherwise halal-certified.
- Do not accept a category answer. “Our emulsifiers are safe” and “our oils are vegetable” may not address this specific compound.
- Recheck reformulations. A supplier statement is evidence for the formulation it names, not a permanent promise for a brand worldwide.

The practical verdict
E435 is halal when its stearic acid and process are from verified acceptable sources. It is prohibited when a porcine feedstock is confirmed, and it remains unresolved when a label gives only the code or chemical name.
Do not panic at “polysorbate”, and do not assume “synthetic-looking” means source-free. Check the fatty-acid origin, keep evidence product- and market-specific, and use the Mushbooh classification when the supplier will not disclose it.
