Halal barcode scanner: check any food product instantly
The barcode on a packet is not just a price tag. It is a globally unique key that unlocks the full declared ingredient list, which is exactly what you need to answer the halal question.
A halal barcode scanner reads the EAN-13 or UPC barcode on a food package, uses that number to retrieve the product's declared ingredient list, and checks every ingredient and E-number against a halal classification database. What a barcode contains
A food barcode carries a number, and nothing else. A European EAN-13 is thirteen digits; a North American UPC-A is twelve. The digits identify the manufacturer prefix and the specific product variant, and the last digit is a checksum.
The barcode contains no ingredient information at all. The scanner does not "read the ingredients from the barcode". It reads the number, then looks that number up. Everything depends on the quality and coverage of the database behind it.
This matters practically: the same chocolate bar sold in the UK and in Malaysia has two different barcodes and often two different recipes. A halal verdict from one region does not automatically transfer to the other, which is why country of origin is shown on the product screen.
How the scan becomes a verdict

Why will my barcode not scan?
- Fill about half the frame with the barcode. Too close and the camera cannot focus; too far and the bars blur together.
- Flatten curved packaging. Tins and bottles bend the bars. Rotate the item so the barcode faces you as flat as possible.
- Kill the glare. Glossy film under supermarket strip lighting is the single most common failure. Tilt the pack 15–20°.
- Hold steady for a beat. Recognition is fast but needs one clean frame.
- Try the other barcode. Multipacks often carry both an outer and an inner code; one may be in the database when the other is not.
What you see after a successful scan
The product screen in HalalFoodScan is deliberately dense, because the useful information is in the detail:
- Product header. Name, package photo, and country of origin with flag. Origin matters: the same brand can use bovine gelatin in one plant and porcine in another.
- Category chips. Colour-coded product categories, useful for spotting that a "drink" is classified as a dairy beverage.
- Verdict card. Green Halal or red Haram, with a one-line explanation.
- Found Additives. Every E-number with its individual status and origin note.
- Full ingredient list. With allergens marked and flagged emulsifiers highlighted.

What if the barcode is not found?
This happens most with local bakery items, store own-brands in smaller markets, and freshly reformulated products. Two fallbacks:

- Look up the additives manually. Read the E-numbers off the pack and check them against the halal E-numbers list.
Barcode scanning versus reading the label yourself
Reading the label yourself is always valid and always the final check. Scanning wins on three practical grounds: it is faster, it does not depend on you reading the local language, and it does not depend on you remembering that E120 is cochineal while E100 is turmeric. Use the scanner to triage quickly, then read the pack for anything the scanner flags as Mushbooh.
Frequently asked questions
Does the barcode itself contain the ingredients?
No. A barcode is only a number that identifies the product. The app uses that number to look up a product record containing the declared ingredient list. This is why database coverage, not barcode quality, determines whether a product is found.
Why does the same product give a different result in another country?
Because it is often a different recipe. Manufacturers reformulate for local markets. Gelatin source, emulsifier source and colourings all commonly vary. Each regional version has its own barcode and its own ingredient declaration, so each gets its own verdict.
Can I scan cosmetics or medicine?
HalalFoodScan is built for food and drink products, where ingredient declarations are standardised and additives use E-numbers. Medicines and cosmetics use different labelling systems and are outside its database.
